Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett (Theme Yarn)

Before reading Extra Yarn, have a box with yarn and two needles placed by the book. Tell the students every time they hear the word knit, make the motion of playing like you are knitting.

This story is so sweet. A young girl named Annabelle finds a box filled with yarn of every color. On each page she knits for others until she meets the archduke. I love this book because it teaches children to care about others and finding your own happiness.

Silly horse

By Vicky Manning

I found a ball of yarn

I found a ball of yarn

Oh me now what can I knit?

I’ll knit me a horse.

I knitted me a horse

I knitted me a horse

Oh me now what can I do with a knitted horse?

Weave yarn inside the shirt

Build a yarn ball in your classroom.

Have students to bring yarn to school and let the students go one at a time during the day to roll their yarn on the ball. Watch it grow!  You could leave it up all year and let the students keep adding to it.

Build a Yarn Hideout

Tie the end of a yarn ball to a table and let the students take turns winding the yarn around the two sides and back of the table. Leave a space for them the hideout!
